Fargo man sentenced for spitting on officer

A Fargo man has been sentenced to time served after pleading guilty to spitting on a Minot Police officer as he was being detained in June 2023.

Travis Joseph Charging, 33, Fargo, was charged with contact by bodily fluids-law enforcement-knowingly, a Class C felony, after an incident on June 11, 2023, at a southwest Minot hotel.

According to court documents, officers were responding to a report of a disorderly male in the hotel’s lobby where he was yelling and being belligerent to two employees at the front desk.

Charging was taken into custody for detoxification and spit on one of the officers in the face while he was being searched. Charging claimed he was spitting out a mint, but the officer noted that they did not see one leave his mouth.

District Court Judge Richard Hagar sentenced Charging to serve 73 days in the Ward County Jail, with credit for 73 days already served. Charging was assessed $525 in court fines and fees, while an indigent recoupment fee of $575 was waived by the Court.
