The proceedings against a Minot man charged with manslaughter and reckless endangerment for a fatal shooting at a local venue began with jury selection Monday.
Travis McDermott, 40, Minot, was charged last year after an incident in the early morning hours of May 14 resulted in the death of Greyson Sletto, 32, Willow City. McDermott is accused by the state of shooting Sletto after an altercation between the two while they attended a concert. McDermott was charged despite his assertion that Sletto had reached for his firearm when he brandished it at Sletto after they exchanged words. Investigators said in court documents that McDermott's claim of self defense was undermined by surveillance video from the venue.
McDermott was initially arrested and held on the Class C felony aggravated assault charge, but prosecutors added a charge of manslaughter involving a dangerous weapon, a Class B felony.
The trial is set to run through Friday.
