The winter warming center at Project BEE reopened the evening of Monday, Jan. 1, 12 days after the homeless shelter abruptly closed its doors.
The shelter's board president and interim executive director Tarina Crook spoke at a press conference on Monday at which she charted the path forward for the nonprofit while also shining a light on behind-the-scenes controversies.
With funding contributed by the INSPIRITUS Community Health Foundation's Twice Bless Program, Crook said the board was focused on keeping the warming center open "for as long as funding will allow." While the diaper pantry will be reopened sometime today, Crook indicated other services like its emergency shelter and community closet will not be reactivated at this time.
Crook pushed on rumors claiming the board no longer had access to bank accounts when it closed, saying the organization is having its financials analyzed and has been fully cooperating with investigators with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Crook clarified that despite prior statements no fraud or embezzlement were discovered, the investigation is ongoing.
