District 6 senator won’t seek reelection

VELVA – State Sen. Shawn Vedaa has announced he will not seek reelection in District 6 this fall. Vedaa said his decision is driven by a commitment to focus on a career opportunity in the agricultural insurance industry.

First elected in 2016, Vedaa has served four terms, winning three elections in eight years. His leadership roles have included vice chairman of Industry Business and Labor (2019-21) and chairman of Government Veteran Affairs (2021-23).He said his work in Appropriations last session was instrumental in meeting the funding needs of the state, most notably to secure funding for the new women’s correctional facilities to be built in Mandan and bring much needed funds back to his district through the Township Assistance Program and the continuance of the Prairie Dog bill.

“The decision to step out of my Senate role was not an easy one. I enjoyed the process and I will miss not being involved. However, at this time I need to focus on new opportunities and place them first along with my family,” Vedaa said.

Vedaa added he will continue to be involved in making his communities and North Dakota the best place to live and thrive.
