District 40 legislator won’t seek reelection

District 40 Rep. Randy Schobinger, R-Minot, has announced he will not seek the endorsement for another term in the North Dakota House.

“While I will not be seeking the endorsement to run for reelection, the message of my time serving the people of District 40 is ‘I did what I said I would do,'” Schobinger said in his announcement. In his run for reelection in 2020, he indicated his desire to secure funds for a new women’s prison facility in Mandan and the development of new facilities at the State Hospital in Jamestown. He noted the 2023 Legislature approved funds for the women’s prison and $12.5 million for planning and development for a new State Hospital.

He also was instrumental in securing funding to move the Ward County Historical Society operations from Minot to Burlington and had worked on Hub City and flood protection funding for Minot as a member of the House Appropriations Committee.

Schobinger was first elected to the House in 2016. He served in the North Dakota Senate from 1994-2006.

Schobinger announced last year that he was undergoing cancer treatment but said his decision not to run is not health-related as his recovery is going well.

His message to District 40 is that “it has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your State Representative in Bismarck. And I sincerely thank you for placing trust in me.”
