Cold weather causes spills in oilfield
The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality and N.D. Oil and Gas Division were contacted in recent days about six spills in the oil field. According to some of the reports, the spills were related to the extreme cold weather.
Scout Energy Management, LLC notified the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality of a produced water and crude oil spill resulting from a tank overflow in Bottineau County. The incident occurred about six miles northwest of Maxbass on Monday.
Scout Energy estimated about 6,720 gallons of produced water and 1,680 gallons of crude oil released from the tanks, with 2,520 gallons leaving the location and impacting surrounding rangeland. Produced water is a byproduct of oil and gas development.
Citation Oil & Gas Corporation notified the N.D. Department of Environmental Quality of a produced water and crude oil spill caused by a tank overflow in Bottineau County. The spill occurred about 30 miles northeast of Minot on Sunday.
Citation estimated about 14,070 gallons of produced water and 630 gallons of oil released from the tanks, with an unknown amount impacting surrounding agricultural land.
Marathon Oil Company also notified the N.D. Department of Environmental Quality of a produced water and crude oil spill caused by a flange leak at a site about nine miles northeast of Dunn Center on Sunday.
Marathon estimated about 7,350 gallons of produced water and 2,982 gallons of oil released with about 42 gallons of fluid misting rangeland off location.
Personnel from Environmental Quality are inspecting the sites and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation.
N.D. Oil and Gas Division was notified of a water injection line leak occurring on Thursday, Jan. 11, near Ross in Mountrail County. All produced water stayed on the pad and within the berm, and there was no offsite impact.
Hess Water Services LLC reported 19,656 gallons of produced water were released due to an equipment failure on location and 4,200 gallons of the produced water were recovered at the time of reporting.
An oil spill occurred Saturday, Jan. 13, at a well in McKenzie County, according to the N.D. Oil and Gas Division.
The spill remained within the tank battery containment berm. White Butte Oil Operations, LLC reported on Saturday that 43,092 gallons of produced water and 2,268 gallons of crude oil were released due to an equipment failure from freezing weather. At the time of reporting, all of the produced water and crude oil had been recovered.
N.D. Oil and Gas Division also reported an oil spill occurred Saturday, Jan. 13, at Watford City.
Goodnight Midstream reported 17,892 gallons of produced water were released on location. At the time of reporting, 6,300 gallons of produced water had been recovered.
A N.D. Oil and Gas inspector has been at each spill location and will monitor the cleanup and remediation.
