The Minot City Council plans to schedule a special meeting this month to address late applications for alcohol licenses.
Twelve 2023 license holders did not submit paperwork for renewal to operate after Dec. 31. Four applicants currently are in the process of working toward regaining licenses.
Ken Oda, director of operators for the Minotauros hockey team, spoke to the council at its meeting Tuesday about the feasibility of gaining approval before the team's first game in Minot on Jan. 12. He explained a misunderstanding of the timeline for application led to a late filing.
Because the Minotauros already has a site for alcohol licensing, it isn't possible to have a different license holder come onto that site and serve alcohol through a special event permit, Police Chief John Klug told the council.
A special meeting to approve late applications can be called by two council members, and Scott Burlingame and Carrie Evans made that request for Jan. 10. Burlingame issued a reminder to license holders not to make the mistake of applying late in the future.
"But I also would hate to have people show up for a hockey game in a town where we need revenue and we need fun and not be able to enjoy themselves," he said.
In other action, the council voted 4-2 to repeal an ordinance that provided for the establishment of a human relations committee. Council members Paul Pitner and Evans voted against repeal. Voting for repeal were Lisa Olson, Mark Jantzer, Scott Burlingame and Mayor Tom Ross. Council member Stephan Podrygula was absent at that point in the meeting.
The council had voted 4-3 on Dec. 18 to acknowledge the work of an ad hoc human relations committee in rewriting the ordinance and to repeal the existing ordinance. The repeal will require a second vote for final passage.
