Army veteran receives Quilt of Valor award

Gordon Thoreson, longtime resident of Voltaire, was honored with the Quilt of Valor award on Wednesday in a ceremony at Somerset Court in Minot. Also present were his wife, Carol Kay, and daughters Dana Thoreson and Angela Heilman.

Thoreson was drafted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 15, 1966, at Towner. He received orders for Vietnam in March 1967 with the 101st Airborne, in which he was a combat medic. After being wounded in Bein Hoa, he was transferred to the 82nd Airborne until he was honorably discharged on Dec. 6, 1968. Thoreson was awarded two Purple Hearts.

Thoreson is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 39 in Velva, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4 in Minot, and was a life member of the Karlsruhe VFW Post 9316 with members transferring to VFW Post 753 in Minot. He is also a member of the 40 & 8 organization.
