Singers in Minot and area communities who would like to take part in the chorus for the 2023 performance of Handel's " Messiah" can join the first rehearsal tonight at 7 in Room 121 in Old Main on the Minot State University campus.
Emerson Eads, director, said the rehearsals will continue every Monday night until December. Scores will be supplied along with free coaching to sing at the Sunday, Dec. 3, concert with orchestra and soloists. The concert will be at 4 p.m. in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall at Minot State.
Prior to the concert on Dec. 3, Eads said, there will be an orchestra rehearsal at 1 p.m., followed by chorus and orchestra rehearsal at 2 p.m., then rehearsal with soloists at 3 p.m.
The presentation in Minot of George F. Handel's "Messiah," considered one of the greatest choral works of all time, brings together local musical groups and individual community singers.
According to The Minot Daily News files, the late E.S. Person, an early Minot resident, was instrumental in starting a production of "The Messiah" with the Minot Choral Club in 1908. The annual performance was held for about 20 years at the Jacobson Opera House, once located on Central Avenue and Main Street. The first presentation of "The Messiah" at present-day Minot State University was given on a Thursday evening, Dec. 19, 1929, by the 140-voice combined men's and ladies' glee clubs.
