JAMESTOWN - Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller and Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer were on hand in Jamestown on Sunday to pay tribute to about 125 members of the North Dakota National Guard's 817th Engineer Company who are deploying for a year-long mission to help U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the southern border.
The unit's deployment follows the deployments of the NDNG's 957th Engineer Company and 1-112 Aviation Battalion to the southern border.
"North Dakota's National Guard members have consistently proven that ours are among the best Guard units in the country. We have no doubt you will prove it again at the southern border, living up to your motto 'Always Ready, Always There,' " said Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller. "On behalf of a grateful state, thank you for your willingness to serve. We pray for your safety and success as you deploy."
"The National Guard represents the finest men and women in our country. The work they do each day to protect our nation, both at home and abroad, does not go unnoticed," Hoeven said. "I've seen firsthand the work of our Guard at the southern border and they have provided invaluable service during this immigration crisis."
"I am struck at this moment, during these times, when so much is asked of the most blessed people in the world. You all step up in such big ways," Cramer said. "As a nation, we exercise global responsibilities while also protecting the home front, and no one does it better than the North Dakota National Guard. We owe a special debt of gratitude to the soldiers, their families, and their employers, who all sacrifice for every mission."
This deployment was in response to Texas Gov. Greg Abbot asking states to send available resources to combat illegal activity at the border and ensure the safety and security of Americans.
