Tribal college receives USDA food systems, ag programs grant

NEW TOWN – Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College in New Town and its partner institution, Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, have received a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to be shared near evenly between the two institutions to support indigenous food systems and agriculture programs.

The grant will support initiatives that create more job opportunities and diverse career paths for indigenous people in the food systems and agriculture sector, according to Ruth Plenty Sweetgrass-She-Kills of NHSC

The grant focuses on providing a Food Systems curriculum and series of flexible hybrid certificate programs designed for non-traditional students and working professionals that can be combined toward an associate of science degree. The grant will also provide scholarships for Indigenous Food Systems students.
