Safely dispose of unusable pesticides

By Doug Goehring 3 min read

Do you have unusable pesticides in your garage, shed or outbuilding? Or have you recently purchased or inherited a home where pesticides were left behind? Farmers, ranchers, pesticide dealers and applicators, government agencies, homeowners and members of the general public who have unusable pesticides can bring them to Project Safe Send.

Project Safe Send is a safe, simple and non-regulatory program that helps people safely and legally dispose of unusable pesticides free of charge. Since 1992, more than 11,300 North Dakotans have brought in over 5.9 million pounds of pesticides to Project Safe Send. We've been helping people properly dispose of unusable pesticides for more than 30 years.

The program accepts old, unusable or banned pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides and fungicides. For a list of accepted items, please go to www.ndda.nd.gov. The collected pesticides are carefully packed and shipped out of state for incineration. Project Safe Send is funded through product registration fees paid by pesticide manufacturers.

People are urged to check their storage areas for any unusable pesticides and safely set them aside for Project Safe Send. If the containers are deteriorating or leaking, pack them in larger containers with absorbent materials. Free heavy-duty plastic bags are available from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture.

Project Safe Send is happening in 12 locations across the state in July at North Department of Transportation facilities from 8 am to 12 pm local time. The dates and locations are as follows:

Tuesday, July 11 – Carrington, 6739 Hwy. 200.

Wednesday, July 12 – Rugby, 603 1st St. NE.

Thursday, July 13 - Langdon, 10424 Hwy. 5.

If you are bringing more than 1,000 pounds, we ask that you preregister by contacting Pesticide Outreach Specialist Aubrey Sondrol at alsondrol@nd.gov or 701-425-3016. A maximum of 5,000 pounds of pesticide per participant will be accepted and each participant is limited to one shuttle.

Please do not bring painting products, fuels, lubricants, antifreeze, fertilizers or soil conditioners to Project Safe Send. For tips on disposing of these products, visit our website or check with local authorities.

The time is now! Check your storage areas and look for a Project Safe Send site near you. The program provides a valuable service to agriculture producers, agribusiness and the public in disposing of outdated or unusable pesticides.
