Ground broken for Minot AFB 68 years ago
MDN File Photo Sixty-eight years ago, a groundbreaking ceremony was held north of Minot for the project to build an Air Force base described as “North Dakota’s first major military installation” and the culmination of a two-year dream.” In this photo, Dr. A.L. Cameron, director in charge of the Military Affairs Committee, Minot Chamber of Commerce, extends greetings to the crowd of about 200 people during the groundbreaking ceremony held Tuesday afternoon, July 12, 1955, for the Minot jet interceptor base that would become Minot Air Force base. Today, the base is the only dual wing, nuclear-capable base in the Air Force, hosting two legs of the U.S. Nuclear Triad. The 5th Bomb Wing has B-52s and the 91st Missile Wing oversees Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles in the Minot missile field.
