Minot International Airport has been awarded $201,755 for maintenance and improvements from state infrastructure grant allocations, according to the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission.
On June 15, the commission finalized about $20 million in grants to 180 projects at 62 public airports throughout North Dakota, of which $14 million went to commercial service airports such as Minot. Minot's funding included money for crack sealing, taxi lane rehabilitation and reconstruction, snow removal equipment, rescue and firefighting equipment, pavement paintings and a mower purchase.
The aeronautics commission provided another $6 million for general aviation airport projects.
Recipients included:
- Bottineau, $22,645 for airfield seal coat.
- Crosby, $57,300 for runway lighting system reconstruction.
- Fessenden, $34,695 for public hangar/storage building concrete floor installation.
- Garrison, $7,850 for security fence construction and $4,409 for mower purchase.
- Harvey, $4,500 for hangar design and $22,122 for crack sealing.
- Kenmare, $33,269 for crack sealing.
- Mohall, $13,820 for crack sealing, $6,720 to construct security gates and $20,875 to purchase snow removal tractor.
- New Town, $24,974 for crack sealing, $9,000 for land acquisition, $105,300 for runway extension design, $6,250 for GPS approach maintenance agreements, $1,906 for runway extension feasibility study and $1,028 for runway extension land survey.
- Parshall, $19,565 to install security gate.
- Rolla, $15,165 for crack sealing, $2,079 to install runway and taxiway reflectors and repair signage, $1,247 to repair and replace weather radio and $2,577 to update fuel system card reader.
- Rugby, $49,341 for terminal/snow removal equipment building construction and $3,948 for electrical system replacement.
- Stanley, $63,125 for airport layout plan update and narrative report.
- Tioga, $30,004 for taxiway edge light installation and $1,603 for taxilane aprons reconstruction.
- Turtle Lake, $56,101 to construct terminal building.
- Watford City, $8,333 for snow removal equipment building design and $11,664 for crack sealing.
- Westhope, $1.4 million for airfield pavement rehabilitation.
Of the total grant allocation, $10 million was provided through funding that was made available for the first time through the Airport Infrastructure Fund. This fund was established as a part of the "Operation Prairie Dog" bill that was passed during the 2019 legislative session to assist with the maintenance and development of the 89 public-use airports throughout North Dakota. The other $10 million allocation was made possible from the Aeronautics Commission's Special Fund, whose primary revenue source is state tax collections on aviation fuel and aircraft sales.
These state grant allocations also match and leverage federal grant dollars. It is estimated that throughout the 2023 construction cycle, North Dakota airport projects will receive about $65 million dollars through those different federal funding sources, which all require matching participation.
