Area agencies carry the torch

About a dozen members of local law enforcement, military and emergency response agencies took part in the Torch Run for the Special Olympics in Minot on Friday.

The group ran from the Minot Auditorium, up the slope of Broadway all the way to Buffalo Wild Wings, shrugging off the haze and the heat for a good cause. Minot Police Officer Jacob Olson estimated that the distance was a little bit more than a 5K. While a far cry from the 16 miles of prior Torch Runs, Olson still expected to have a bucket of fun, nonetheless.

"I'm not really too worried about it. There is a haze. I was hoping it was just fog, but it is what it is. It's for charity. It's going to be fine," Olson said. "The community is really supportive. We have people from the Air Force, the sheriff's department and firefighters. It's a crazy multi-agency thing and we all get together and do well for this charity."

As they set out to conquer the slopes of Broadway near downtown, the runners were flanked by two police vehicles and a city bus, which crept alongside them just in case any of them needed to drop out for a breather or a drink of water.

"Whether we run a block or a mile, I have a lot of fun doing it. But it's usually the painful part after it's over where I'm like 'Oh, I'm so glad that was over. Maybe I won't run next year.' And then usually when it comes back up again, I'm so glad to run," Olson said.
