McKinley Elementary students get lesson on baking

McKinley Elementary students in Minot were treated to a field trip to local bakery, Prairie Sky Breads, on May 23. Kindergarten through second-grade students were put in a circuit of hands-on education to see if they have what it takes to be a professional baker.
"It's almost summer, the kids are just so ready to wiggle," said co-owner of Prairie Sky Breads, Travis Gerjets, who is a former daycare operator with a soft spot for children. Alongside co-owner and former schoolteacher, Jazmine Schultz, they created the curriculum for Prairie Sky Bread's maiden-voyage of hosting field trips.
Prairie Sky Breads created three stations of immersive education for students to flex their creative muscles while learning about the baking industry. The first station was a hands-on baking skills demonstration lead by Gerjets. Students weighed out and kneaded common baking ingredients to make a moldable dough that they could take home and sculpt with.
Students were given a snack of homemade chocolate chip cookies before they continued to the second station — letting their creativity take over while decorating the sidewalk in front of the bakery with chalk art.
At the third station students competed in "The Baking Olympics," where they played "Bun in the Hole," where students played Cornhole with day-old buns to test coordination. They then tried out their delivery skills with bread and water relay races and then contended to see who could fold bread boxes the fastest.
First-grade teacher, Kelsey Walz, was impressed with the number of planned activities saying, "This is so awesome. This was so much more than we were expecting it to be. This is the best field trip we've had all year!"
