A Minot family has turned to the public for help to see them through a health crisis. Paula and Kevin Burckhard announced on a fundraising platform that their daughter Grace Burckhard, has been in the hospital receiving treatment for pneumonia.

Grace, who has Down syndrome, has been in the hospital for the last eight days according to the campaign, where she remains despite a battery of antibiotics and surgery to remove liquid from her lungs. Grace is presently sedated and intubated to facilitate further treatment but has her mother by her side as she heals. In a message posted to Facebook, Paula said they are taking things one day at a time.

The Burckhards have three other children with Down syndrome at home with Kevin, and according to the campaign, they have exhausted Paula's available sick days during Grace's extended hospital stay. The campaign's goal is for $10,000 to help mitigate the loss of income while Paula is away from work, and the possibility of additional medical costs as Grace fights off her illness. The campaign was opened on Friday morning and had brought in more than $8,000 from more than 90 donations by early afternoon.
