Alexander students place first at state mock trial competition

ALEXANDER -- The State Bar Association of North Dakota held the latest edition of its High School Mock Trial Competition on April 11, and the team from Alexander High School took home the top prize.

Held at the Burleigh County Courthouse in Bismarck, the Mock Trial Program serves to introduce students to the American legal system. The program brings students together with attorneys, judges and teachers from across the state to get hands on experience with the trial process and procedure and to improve skills in communication, public speaking, teamwork, reasoning and critical thinking.

The champion team from Alexander was made up of students Angel Ochoa, Austin Beall, Brooke Rykhus, Dakota Erickson, Kyrarah Kibbe, Marshall Erickson and Tylan Womelsdorf. Rykhus also was awarded Outstanding Witness, and Marshall Erickson was named Outstanding Attorney. The team's teacher is Amber Severson and their Attorney Coach was Northwest District Judge Daniel El-Dweek of Watford City.
