Spring into an active lifestyle!

When spring rolls around, we can’t help but smile.

It’s a special time in Minot, meant to be savored and enjoyed. It represents new beginnings and a fresh start, with spring colors slowly taking form as the snow begins to melt and the sun begins to shine. It’s a time when we can appreciate the natural beauty of our surroundings, seeing what makes Minot so special. And, after months of snow and freezing temperatures, it can’t help but bring a smile to our faces.

As the world begins to warm up, it’s the perfect time for seniors to make sure that they are staying active and living a healthy lifestyle. For older Americans, an active lifestyle is key to long-term wellness and increased health outcomes. Seniors that exercise are less likely to break bones or suffer from heart disease and other negative health outcomes. Additionally, seniors that remain active report better mental wellness and decreased levels of depression and anxiety.

Exercise does not need to take the form of weightlifting, jogging or other high-intensity, taxing activities. Rather, seniors can get their exercise in by doing many things, some of which they already enjoy. Studies show that walking, gardening and dancing can increase wellness and lead to better cardiovascular health!

An active lifestyle encompasses more than just exercise, however. In order to be truly balanced, seniors must focus on their social well-being, eschewing isolation for the company of friends and family. And believe it or not, seniors that remain social experience better health outcomes and have a decreased risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease!
