MINOT AIR FORCE BASE – Minot Air Force Base contributed $595 million to the local area economy in fiscal year 2022, according to a report released by the base Thursday.
Heather Malensek of the 5th Comptroller Squadron at Minot AFB reported to community and military leaders on the base’s annual economic impact analysis at the Minot Area Chamber EDC’s Military Affairs Committee held at the Sleep Inn & Suites.
Combining the base’s yearly economic impact numbers has resulted in billions of dollars over the years contributed to the local area. More than 12,000 people make up MAFB, including personnel, their families and civilian employees.
The base’s economic impact goes into the local area in many ways, including spending by military members on purchasing or renting housing, buying vehicles, clothing and other items. The base spends money on construction, services and procurements of materials, equipment and supplies.
Money is played out in the local area by the number of indirect jobs created. More than 2,000 indirect jobs were created in fiscal year 2022, with more than $108 million in value.
More than 1,400 military retirees live in Minot and the local area. Their payroll brings in more than $36 million. They are former members of service branches including Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps.
“Each year we look forward to seeing the economic impact of Minot Air Force Base, as nearly $600 million annually helps support the overall economy of our community,” Brekka Kramer, president and CEO of the Minot Area Chamber EDC, said. “The missions at Minot Air Force Base not only have a significant impact on our community but nationally with two legs of the nuclear triad.”
Minot AFB is expected to have a positive economic impact on Minot and the area in future years.
