Daycare provider charged with murder

CARRINGTON — Patricia Wick, 48, Carrington, has been charged with Class AA felony murder, Class B felony abuse of a child and operating a daycare without a license, a Class B misdemeanor.

The charges originate from an incident on Sept. 26, 2022, when authorities responded to a report of an unresponsive 5-month-old baby at an in-home daycare operated by Wick in Carrington. The infant was flown to Sanford Hospital in Fargo, where the child eventually succumbed to his injuries.

During the investigation by the Carrington Police Department, the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Buffalo Bridges Human Service Zone, it was discovered that a second child had allegedly been injured while in the care of Wick earlier that month, resulting in a broken arm. Investigators determined that Wick was operating without a license and had more than five children in her care.

Wick was arrested and had a bond hearing on Monday in district court in Foster County before Judge James Hovey, who set Wick’s bail at $500,000 cash or surety and required that she have no contact with the victims’ families. Wick’s initial appearance is scheduled for Feb. 7.
