Independent challenger files for U.S. Senate

BISMARCK — Rep. Rick Becker of Bismarck submitted petitions Tuesday to enter the race for the U.S. Senate, challenging Sen. John Hoeven, R-ND.

A plastic surgeon, businessman and former gubernatorial candidate, Becker narrowly lost the Republican endorsement to Hoeven at last spring’s state convention. He originally had said he would not run against Hoeven but announced in August that he would gather the necessary 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot as an independent.

He announced Tuesday that he submitted more than double the number of required signatures to qualify for the ballot.

“America is on the precipice of losing everything. Inflation is through the roof, crime rates are skyrocketing and the current administration seems more concerned with funding their careers in politics than they are with addressing our crippling national debt,” he said. “We can no longer afford to maintain the status quo if we wish to put North Dakota and our country back on the path to prosperity. We need to elect uncompromising, bold leaders to the United States Senate who will rein in the spending, reel back the over-regulation and take on the corrupt globalist agenda headfirst.”
