Shalana Brown receives deferred sentence on child neglect charge

Shalana Nicole Brown, 40, Minot, received a deferred imposition of sentence on Tuesday for two years of supervised probation on a Class C felony child neglect charge.

North Central District Court Judge Gary Lee also ordered Brown to cooperate with Ward County Social Services regarding the children and to pay court costs.

Brown will receive credit for the 63 days she has already served in the Ward County Jail, plus nine days off her sentence for good behavior. Her sentence is concurrent with a sentence in another case. Her probation in that case was revoked earlier this fall and she will be on supervised probation in that case as well.

The child neglect charge will eventually be dismissed if she successfully completes probation.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Brown left four young children unattended in an unkempt Minot hotel room on Oct. 30, 2020. A hotel employee told Minot police that she had entered the room and found one of the children choking on a small plastic ring from a soda bottle. The witness removed the ring from the child’s mouth and the child was not injured. Brown was not present in the room at the time and the witness told police that it was not the first time that the children had been left unattended there.

The children are in the custody of Ward County Social Services. Brown told the judge on Tuesday that she has been taking a parenting class and has been cooperating with Social Services.
