Police identify murder victim, suspected perpetrator
Minot police have identified two people who were found dead in southwest Minot yesterday in a suspected murder-suicide as Carrie Welnel, 50, the homicide victim, and Caleb Heyward-Treib, 23, the suspected perpetrator.
Welnel was found shot to death shortly after 7 a.m. and Heyward-Treib was found dead in a backyard a short distance away from the crime scene. There were no obvious signs of trauma on Heyward-Treib, according to police, and his cause of death was not determined. There will be an autopsy conducted.
Police are still investigating the incident.
Heyward-Treib had been charged with breaking a former girlfriend’s hand during a domestic violence altercation at a Minot residence. However, the charge was later dismissed in October 2019.
Welnel is listed on LinkedIn as having worked as the family self-sufficiency coordinator at the Minot Housing Authority.
