Westhope man dies from injuries in crash

BOTTINEAU – A Westhope man died from injuries in a two-vehicle crash on Bottineau County Road #6, two miles west of Westhope, on Wednesday.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol said the 2011 John Deere Gator utility vehicle, driven by a 72-year-old Westhope man, and a 2008 GMC Acadia, driven by Cyla McMechan, 18, Antler, were going east on the road shortly after 8 a.m. The GMC Acadia was en route from Antler to Westhope. The utility vehicle was en route from a farmstead in rural Westhope and going to Westhope. The GMC Acadia struck the utility vehicle from behind, sending both vehicles into the south ditch. The driver of the GMC Acadia was wearing a seatbelt and the airbags deployed. Nether occupant in the utility vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

McMechan was taken by ambulance and later released from the hospital. The utility vehicle driver and passenger, David Mason, 59, Westhope, were taken by ambulance to Trinity Hospital, Minot, where the driver died. Mason suffered injuries. The name of the driver was not released yet.

The crash remains under investigation by the N.D. Highway Patrol.
