Minot pedestrian dies in pickup accident

An elderly Minot pedestrian was killed when struck by a pickup in southwest Minot Tuesday, according to the Minot Police Department.

Carl Melby, 91, was crossing the street at about 11:11 a.m. and stopped in the middle of the roadway, police reported following an investigation. The driver of the pickup, Brent Berntsen, 51, of Minot, was traveling southbound. Coming over the crest of the hill in the 800 block of Sixth Street Southwest, he was unable to stop, and Melby was struck while standing in the southbound lane.

Melby was transported to Trinity Hospital, where he later died.

No criminal charges are pending at this time. Berntsen was cited for care required in operation of a motor vehicle.
