Much of North Dakota expected to receive heavy snowfall

Minot to miss heaviest snowfall

The National Weather Service issued both a Special Weather Statement and Hazardous Weather Outlook early Tuesday afternoon, stating that a significant winter storm will “impact the Northern Plains Wednesday night through Thursday.”

Although the Minot area is expected to see some snowfall from the system, the worst of the storm looks to be tracking south of Ward County said John Paul Martin, NWS meteorologist in Bismarck.

“It’s the real deal but it looks like the worst of it will be along the North Dakota-South Dakota border,” said Martin. “That’s not to say Minot isn’t going to get anything, but the chance of receiving six inches or more of snow is actually quite low in Minot.”

The pattern of the storm as of Tuesday afternoon led the NWS to anticipate the least amount of snow falling along the North Dakota-Canada border. While Minot is considered to be in the 10-40% category of receiving six inches of snow, other areas of the state are expected to fall more within the center of the target of the storm.

Bismarck, Jamestown and points in between could see 10 inches or more of snow. Six inches or more is forecast for a wide swath of the state roughly south of a line from Dickinson to Grand Forks and all the way to the South Dakota border.

“Washburn has better than a 50% chance of getting six inches of snow,” said Martin, noting that the past two snowfall predictions by the NWS have been “just a hair under what reality has been.”

The track of the storm, says the NWS, is basically along and south of U.S. Highway 200 where heavy snow is possible. Furthermore, colder temperatures are expected throughout the state on the back side of the storm system. For example, overnight low temperatures in Minot and Bismarck are expected to be in the single digits Friday night.
