Minot man retires from National Guard

Jeff Barta, Minot, retired after 40 years of continuous National Guard.

Barta, with the rank of master sergeant, retired from military service on Sept. 21. He enlisted in Mitchell, S.D., on July 25, 1980. He has served in South Dakota and North Dakota.

His final assignment was with the 164th Regiment at Devils Lake, serving as a trainer and instructor for the Officer Candidate School. Barta deployed to Honduras, Germany and most recently to Iraq with his daughter Heather.

Barta was awarded the North Dakota Legion of Merit, the Samuel Sharp medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, five Army commendation awards and the Military Outstanding Service Medal plus numerous other medals, achievements and citations.
