Kyle Olson-Gilbert, Minot, sentenced for felony terrorizing, domestic violence

Kyle James Olson-Gilbert, 24, Minot, was sentenced on Tuesday to a year and a day in prison and two years of supervised probation for shoving, strangling and terrorizing his girlfriend during an argument on June 3.

Court records show that Olson-Gilbert pleaded guilty to Class C felony terrorizing and Class C felony domestic violence causing serious bodily injury.

Judge Doug Mattson also ordered Olson-Gilbert to complete a domestic violence offenders evaluation and follow through on recommended treatment and pay $700 in court costs. He will receive credit for 63 days time served and nine days off for good behavior.

According to court documents, Olson-Gilbert and his girlfriend had an argument and Olson-Gilbert threatened to kill the woman, shoved her multiple times and at one point put his left hand on her neck and squeezed for up to three seconds. He also backed her into a corner and approached her while holding a knife in his hand that he had grabbed from a butcher’s block. He shoved her toward the door and the knife in his hand scraped her just a couple of inches above her left collar bone, according to the affidavit. The woman then left and sought medical treatment and reported the incident to police.

Earlier this summer Olson-Gilbert entered into a pre-trial diversion agreement on a child neglect charge for failure to supervise his 2-year-old son, who twice got out of the house and went wandering the neighborhood. On the first occasion, on April 25, more than 100 volunteers helped search the Valley Street neighborhood. The toddler was found sleeping in a nearby, unoccupied house hours later and returned to his parents but the boy got out of the house again on May 19. The child’s mother, Kirstina Hochsprung, also entered into a pre-trial diversion agreement on a child neglect charge. Both parents agreed to cooperate with Social Services and follow through on recommended services, obtain chemical dependency evaluations and domestic violence evaluations. If they follow through on all the recommendations, the child neglect charge will be dismissed.
