Granville man in custody following weekend incident in Velva
A Granville man is in custody and facing numerous charges after allegedly striking people outside a Velva bar with his pickup truck early Sunday morning.
According to a release from the McHenry County Sheriff, at 12:49 a.m. Sunday, emergency calls were made from the Lariat Bar in Velva. Officers from McHenry County and ND Highway patrol responded to the scene. The ND BCI was also contacted for assistance.
The callers reported that a 1 ton Dodge pickup had driven through a crowd of people in the parking lot of the bar. Multiple injuries reported at the time. The bar was full from a benefit motorcycle run on Saturday.
In total two males and two females were transported by ambulance and private vehicle to Trinity Hospital in Minot. All four were treated and released according to sources, the sheriff said.
The vehicle was driven by Jason Kunkel, 41, of Granville.
The vehicle left the scene and was recovered at the intersection of Highways 41 and 52 minutes later. The driver was not located at the time. The vehicle was inoperable and was impounded by officers and towed from the scene.
In the parking lot four people were injured, three motorcycles were damaged as well as two SUV’s and a pickup, all as a result of being struck by Kunkel’s pickup.
Mid-morning on Sunday Kunkel made a phone call to Sheriff Trey Skager and was interviewed by officers from McHenry County and ND BCI at Minot.
Kunkel was arrested after the interview on the following charges:
– driving under the influence
– criminal mischief
– leaving the scene of an injury accident
– reckless driving
– reckless endangerment
and aggravated assault
Further charges may be forth coming. No bond has been arranged at this time.
