Plans for Minot Public Schools are still in flux

Minot Public School District Superintendent Mark Vollmer said Tuesday that administrators have been waiting for more guidance from the governor before making firm plans about how teachers and students will return to school this fall.

Vollmer said he had some hope that the school district would be granted more flexibility in planning based on the relatively low rate of new coronavirus infections in the Minot area.

He said educators have been doing a lot of planning based on a multitude of possible scenarios. Possible options include a “blended model” including some combination of distance learning and face-to-face classroom time for students. Previous guidelines had directed schools to limit the number of people in classrooms to no more than 15 and to take other precautions.

Vollmer said he and superintendents at other Class A schools will also be meeting. One topic of discussion is how best to work with teachers who are high risk if they catch the coronavirus and are hesitant to return to the classroom. He said the district’s human resource department is studying that issue and looking at options the teachers might have for taking leave under federal guidelines.

He warned that plans are likely to be subject to change as new data becomes available about the incidence of coronavirus in the state and CDC guidelines.
