Silouette Griffin, Minot, sentenced to time served, probation, for being under the influence while caring for baby, toddler

Silouette Lamesha Griffin, 32, Minot, was sentenced on Wednesday to 18 months in prison, all suspended but the one day she already served in the Ward County Jail, and two years of supervised probation for being high on marijuana and drunk while she was caring for her own baby daughter and a friend’s 18-month-old toddler on March 4.

Griffin pleaded guilty to one count of Class C felony child neglect. A second Class C felony child neglect charge against her was dropped.

North Central District Court Judge Gary Lee also ordered Griffin to obtain a chemical dependency evaluation. He also ordered that she is to cooperate with Social Services recommendations and to have no contact with her daughter except what is allowed by Social Services.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Griffin’s friend called police after she returned to pick up her toddler and Griffin did not answer the door. The friend peered through a bedroom window and saw Griffin lying passed out on a bed. The friend flagged down a patrol car. The fire department also responded and gained entry to the apartment. The baby and toddler were on the floor next to the bedroom entrance. Both children were crying. Griffin was unresponsive.

The apartment smelled strongly of marijuana. A clear bag containing 4.1 grams of marijuana was in the bathroom sink next to Griffin’s bedroom. There were multiple bags of marijuana on the bed, weighing in at a combined 26.7 grams. An empty beer bottle was on the sink in the bathroom and another empty beer bottle was in the kitchen trash. Someone had vomited in the toilet, which had not been flushed. A steak knife with a 5-inch blade was lying on the night stand next to Griffin’s bed, in reach of the children.

Firefighters and rescue personnel told the responding officer that Griffin woke up after they had been at the scene for about 5 to 10 minutes. They said Griffin walked into the corner of her bedroom, squatted down and urinated on the floor while they were there. Her pupils were heavily dilated.

The 18-month-old toddler was returned to Griffin’s friend and Social Services took custody of Griffin’s baby daughter.
