Governor announces rule change for basic care to ensure people get $1,200 stimulus checks

Gov. Doug Burgum announced Tuesday that officials have agreed to an emergency rule change that will enable people living in state-funded basic care facilities to use their federal $1,200 stimulus checks in any way that they choose.

Federal waivers did not apply because the basic care program is entirely state funded.

Without the administrative rule change, the $1,200 checks would have been seized and applied toward the expenses of people living in those facilities.

Burgum also announced another executive order suspending a rule that students applying for an academic or CTE scholarship not have a letter grade below a C in any of their courses.

The rule applies for classes taken during the 2020 spring semester.

Burgum said they do not want students to miss out on the scholarship because they had a grade fall below a C because they were struggling to adjust to distance learning.

Burgum also announced that there were 63 additional new cases of the coronavirus in the state as of Tuesday, out of 1,990 tests that were conducted. Of those 1,990, some 1,170 people were newly tested. Some 820 were people who had previously been tested.

There have been a total of 1,994 positive cases in the state, with 1,269 recoveries and 45 deaths. Thirty-two people are currently hospitalized.

Ward County has had a total of 28 cases, with no new cases reported as of the most recent figures. One person in Ward County died and 21 people have recovered from the virus.
