Timothy Smith, Minot, sentenced to 18 months for burglary, also sentenced for deliberately flooding his jail cell

Timothy Chrishaod Smith, 35, Minot, will end up serving about 18 months in jail for burglarizing a Minot residence on Dec. 24, 2019 and being in possession of counterfeit bills. He also received a concurrent sentence for deliberately pulling a sprinkler head out of the ceiling in his Ward County Jail cell and flooding the cell on Feb. 2.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and two years of supervised probation on the Class C felony burglary charge and given credit for 98 days already served in jail. He was also ordered to pay $1,100 in court costs and restitution yet to be determined. He was sentenced to 360 days in jail, all suspended but the 98 days he has already served, and two years of probation for the Class C felony possession of counterfeit money charge. That offense will be deemed a Class A misdemeanor if he successfully completes probation. Smith was sentenced to a year and a day in jail for the Class C felony criminal mischief charge, all suspended but the 63 days he has already served, and three years of supervised probation. Court records show that North Central District Court Judge Gary Lee also ordered Smith to pay $525 in court costs for the Class C felony criminal mischief charge and reserved restitution in the case for 90 days.

According to the court documents in the burglary case, police received a report that Smith entered the residence without authorization wearing a ski mask and carrying a backpack. Smith was found hiding in an unattached garage and had four counterfeit $100 bills on his person.

According to the court documents in the criminal mischief case, jail video showed Smith standing on his bed on Feb 2, reaching toward the ceiling to grab the sprinkler head, twisting his hand until the sprinkler head snapped off, and causing water to flood the cell. Smith used his mattress to shield himself from the spray. Staff had to shut off a manual valve to stop the flow. That stopped the water flow to a number of cells and caused a dark-colored, oil-like substance to be sprayed from the sprinkler head all over items in the cell. Various objects in the cell were destroyed.

Jail records list known aliases for Smith as “Cookie” and “Rashad.”
