Jamie Frederick Douglas Schmidt, 45, was sentenced on Wednesday to 10 years in prison, with a requirement that he serve four years, and five years of supervised probation on Class B felony luring a minor by computer charge.

Schmidt, who lived in Winnipeg, traveled to Minot in August 2019 to have sex with a 14-year-old boy. The boy did not exist. Schmidt had been communicating with a fake profile set up by the Ward County Sheriff’s Department on Grindr, an app used primarily by gay men who are seeking sex with other gay men.

North Central District Court Judge Gary Lee also ordered Schmidt to register as a sex offender and pay $125 in court costs. Schmidt will receive credit for 147 days already served in the Ward County Jail.
