School board approves calendar

The Minot Public School Board approved on Thursday a calendar for the 2020-21 school year that calls for an Aug. 20 start date, two weeks off at Christmas, and for the last day of school to be on May 25, with graduation to be held on May 30.

This schedule got the most votes on an online survey about the calendar that district patrons filled out earlier this week.

The complete schedule follows:

Aug. 20: First Day of School.

Sept. 7: Labor Day, no school.

Sept. 8: Professional development day for teachers, no school for students.

Oct. 22-23: Administrator convention days, no school for students.

Nov. 11: Veteran’s Day, no school.

Nov. 26-27: Thanksgiving vacation.

Dec. 21-Jan. 3: Christmas vacation.

Jan. 18: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Professional development day for teachers, no school for students.

Feb. 15: Professional development day for teachers, no school for students.

March 10-12: Spring break.

April 2-April 5: Easter break.

May 25: Last day of school for students.

May 30: Graduation.

During the board meeting on Thursday, school board members also heard a presentation on how the district should re-draw school attendance areas to better balance class sizes at different elementaries. This means that some children may potentially end up being assigned to different schools within the district. Public input sessions will be held on March 20 to give the community a chance to provide feedback on the proposals. Lewis and Clark Elementary in particular has more students this year. School officials again mentioned that the two middle schools in Minot, particularly Jim Hill Middle School, will likely see even more overcrowding in the coming years.

The board also went into executive session following the regular meeting to discuss negotiations for a possible land acquisition for the district.
