Minot Public Library teaches ‘adulting’ skills

Submitted Photo Josh Pikka, technology coordinator for the Minot Public Library, holds two measuring cups that he will use to get the right amount of ingredients for instant pot hot chocolate.

Zhaina Moya with the Minot Public Library will be hosting Adulting 101 tonight at 6:30.

Once a month, Adulting 101 will go over basic skills that adults need to get by. Some are not things that are passed down any longer, like sewing or changing a tire. Moya hopes to remedy that and give adults the skills they need.

“The goal is to help people with day-to-day skills they need to be a functioning adult,” Moya said.

Tonight, Moya will focus on basic sewing using a needle and thread. Those who attend will learn how to sew on a button. Next, they will learn how to hem by making a coffee mug sleeve from fabric.

Alternative cooking using an instant pot can be useful for those just starting out in their own place after graduation. Young adults who do not have a lot of experience measuring wet and dry ingredients will learn how to do so by making hot chocolate in an instant pot.

In future sessions, Moya hopes to add in learning how to use kitchen knives safely and how to handle raw meat, and teach people how to use an air fryer. Eating and being healthy are also important, and the class will go over using fitness or health apps that can help people live a healthier lifestyle.

Another thing on her list is bringing in someone from a bank to talk to Adulting 101 students about financial responsibility and preparedness.

Changing a tire or the oil in one’s vehicle is also very important. In the event that someone ends up with a flat tire and no cell phone service to call roadside assistance, the driver will need to know how to change their own tire to get going again. Vehicle oil changes are necessary to keep it running smoothly and prolong the life of the engine. Knowing how to change it when they may not have access to a mechanic soon enough is crucial to preventing spending thousands of dollars on a new engine.

Some small town schools do not teach home economics classes. Teens that graduate from a rural or smaller school may not have access to learning some life basics, and Moya wants to help them the best she can.

To attend Adulting 101, contact the Minot Public Library to sign up for people 18 and older. Preregistration is required. Each class will consist of life skills and will always have a cooking element involved.
