Corey Payne, Minot, charged with possession of stolen motor vehicle

Corey Edward Payne, 31, Minot, is charged with Class B felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle in district court in Minot.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, the vehicle belonged to a man who made a report to his probation officer that his vehicle had been stolen from a motel parking lot in June. The man had tried to make a report to police in Fargo but the Fargo police wouldn’t take a report because his estranged wife still had keys to the truck. His estranged wife refused to report the vehicle stolen. The probation officer checked into the story and discovered that Payne had been in the vehicle when police had contact with it on Feb. 12 and Payne last lived in Minot in Western Village. A witness there told police that Payne has been in possession of the vehicle since at least July of 2019.

Payne claimed that he had purchased the vehicle that was found in his possession but could not produce a title or bill of sale.

Payne was scheduled to make an initial appearance on the charge on Tuesday before Judge Doug Mattson.
