Dustin Hanson, Minot, sentenced for strangling pregnant woman

Dustin Ray Hanson, 33, Minot, who was originally charged with Class C felony aggravated assault-domestic violence and was accused of strangling his wife, who was eight months pregnant, on Sept. 13, pleaded guilty last Friday to a reduced charge of Class A misdemeanor simple assault-domestic violence.

Court records show that North Central District Court Judge Richard Hagar sentenced Hanson to 360 days in jail, with a requirement that he serve four days, and two years of supervised probation. Hagar also ordered Hanson to obtain a chemical dependency evaluation, to complete an anger management course and to complete a course for domestic violence offenders. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victim.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Hanson had pushed the woman onto a bed, got on top of her and tried to strangle her with both hands. He threatened to kill the woman and said he didn’t care she was pregnant. He let the woman go because he didn’t actually want to kill her and told her to go and call the police. Hanson then called the police himself and reported that he had strangled his wife, according to the affidavit. Hanson also apologized for his actions when he made an initial appearance in court in September.
