Jordan Bahnsen given suspended sentence, 3 years probation, for 2018 burglary spree

Jordan Taylor Bahnsen, 24, was sentenced on Wednesday to five years in prison, all suspended, and three years of supervised probation for his part in a 2018 burglary spree in Minot.

Bahnsen pleaded guilty to Class A felony conpiracy to commit burglary, with the take exceeding $50,000; Class B felony burglary committed at night; Class B felony possession of stolen property valued at between $10,000 and $50,000; and Class C felony theft of property valued at between $1,000 and $10,000.

The state dismissed multiple other charges against Bahnsen, but he agreed to pay restitution to his victims on all the dismissed charges that were connected with him, as well as on the charges he pleaded guilty to.

The restitution has not yet been determined, but Ward County State’s Attorney Roza Larson told Judge Todd Cresap the amount will be “substantial.”

Bahnsen and his co-defendants, Raven Ware and Andrew Schell, burglarized businesses and private residences between May and July 2018. Both Bahnsen and Schell are serving time at the state penitentiary on other charges for crimes committed during the same time frame.

Schell is still facing multiple charges in the case related to the burglary spree.

Ware was sentenced last month to two years in prison, all suspended except for the 148 days she has already served in the Ward County Jail, plus three years of supervised probation and 500 hours of community service for her role in the burglary spree.

On Wednesday, Larson acknowledged that the light sentence Bahnsen has received is unusual. However, she said it took quite some time for her office to get all the latest burglary charges ready to file. Had they been filed at the same time Bahnsen was sentenced on his other charges, all of the latest charges would have been included together in the same plea deal, she said.

Larson said this case was an “anomaly” and her office would not make the same sentencing recommendation for similar charges in the future.

Cresap also ordered Bahnsen to have no contact with his victims and to stay 500 feet away from the businesses he burglarized.

Bahnsen’s attorney, Ashley Gulke, said he is from Fargo and he will likely have no reason to visit the Minot businesses again.

“Let’s put (the distance provision) at 30 miles and keep him out of Minot,” said Larson, who was joking.

Gulke said Bahnsen wants to learn a trade such as welding so he can pay back all the restitution.

If he fails to comply with all the terms of probation, including paying the restitution, he could be re-sentenced in the cases. The maximum sentence for an A felony is 20 years in prison; the maximum for a B felony is 10 years in prison and the maximum sentence for a C felony is five years in prison.

Bahnsen is scheduled to be released from the state penitentiary next summer after he has finished serving his sentence on the other burglary charges.
