Sarah Engelstad, Minot, charged with interfering with 911 call

Sarah Beth Engelstad, 36, Minot, is accused of interfering when a child made a 911 call on Wednesday evening.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, the boy told a dispatcher that Engelstad had gone into the bathroom with a younger child and a butcher knife and he was afraid she would harm herself. Engelstad came out of the bathroom while he was on the phone, took the phone away from him and disconnected it when she realized he had called 911.

Police responded to the residence. Engelstad told police she hung up the phone because “We did not need you guys here.” She denied ever having a butcher knife in the bathroom and said she was just taking a bath.

Engelstad was drunk and had a .137 BAC reading when she was given a breath test. Ward County Social Services was contacted and a social worker planned to remove the children from Engelstad’s home. Engelstad had prior involvement with Social Services, according to the affidavit.

Engelstad made an initial appearance in district court in Minot on Thursday before Judge Todd Cresap on the Class C felony charge of interference with an emergency call.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Nov. 14 before Cresap.
