Leonard Lorntson Jr., Minot, sentenced for aggravated assault

Leonard Leroy Lorntson Jr., 61, Minot, was sentenced on Wednesday to 360 days in jail, all suspended but the one day he has already served, and one year of supervised probation for striking a 16-year-old boy in the leg on May 28.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Lorntson wanted the boy to end a romantic relationship with Lorntson’s then 15-year-old daughter, who has a developmental disability and has a “very low IQ.” The boy had allegedly admitted to police after the attack that he had been involved with Lorntson’s daughter. Lorntson believed the boy had taken advantage of her.

Lorntson had originally been charged with hitting the boy with a baseball bat. Under the terms of a plea deal, the state agreed to take language referring to the weapon out of the language in the charging document. If Lorntson had pleaded guilty to using a weapon in the attack, it would have triggered a mandatory prison sentence.

Lornton pleaded guilty to Class C felony aggravated assault involving a minor victim. If he successfully completes probation, the charge will be reduced to a Class A misdemeanor.

Judge Gary Lee also ordered Lorntson to pay $525 in court costs and to have no contact with the boy.
