Evan Darden, Lake Stevens, Wash., charged with possession of stolen truck, writing forged check

Evan Mitchell Darden, 28, Lake Stevens, Wash., is charged in district court in Minot with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, writing a check on another person’s account using a stolen checkbook, and possession of the stolen checkbook.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court by Berthold Police Chief Al Schmidt, Berthold police had received a report on Tuesday that a man was behaving in a disorderly manner and going in and out of the Berthold Cenex Station. Darden would go in and out and then wander around the store. He was driving a white truck with a UND Sioux logo in the back window. Schmidt responded, checked the vehicle, and discovered that the 2014 Ford F150 truck had been reported stolen from Bismarck. Inside the vehicle was a checkbook belonging to a Bismarck man. Darden had written a check using the stolen checkbook to pay for fuel and other items at the store.

Schmidt saw youth football equipment in the vehicle and told Darden that a child was missing that. Darden told Schmidt he saw the football equipment after he took the truck and did feel bad about it, but it was already too late to turn back. Darden later told Schmidt a girl gave him the truck, but he didn’t know her name.

Darden is charged with Class B felony possession of stolen property valued at between $10,000 and $50,000 and two Class C felonies related to unauthorized use of the checks and possession of the stolen checkbook.

He was scheduled to make an initial appearance on Friday before Judge Richard Hagar.
