Valve/piping connection leak causes brine spill

WILLISTON – A valve/piping connection leak caused the release of 335 barrels of brine at a well site about nine miles west of Williston on Friday.

Brine, or produced water, is a byproduct of oil and gas production. It consists of water from the geologic formation, injection water, oil and salts, according to North Dakota State University, Fargo, information.

Equinor Energy LP reported the incident to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division on Monday. At the time of reporting all 335 barrels of brine were recovered, according to a news release.

The incident occurred at the Reiten 23-14 1TFH well site. The released brine was contained on the constructed well site, according to the news release. A N.D. Oil and Gas inspector has been to location and will monitor any additional cleanup progress.
