Minot Lions 0.5 K TrySlothAlon Fundraiser and Eyeglass Drive set for next weeekend

On Saturday, Aug. 17, at 10 a.m., the Minot Lions Club will be leading a group of ridiculously fun people on a 5-block adventure. Starting at Ben’s Tavern ticketholders will be graced with a morning beverage to get them pumped for the trek.

At their own pace, they can journey along a magical path of joy (and joyness). Hopscotch, Yardzee, a bicycle slow race, Cornhole, lawn darts, and croquet, the path will lead you towards… a decision! Can you handle the 480′ round trip Ironman Challenge towards Atypical Brewery for a taste of some crafty local goodness. Or would you rather save your limited sloth energy and get to the refueling station for the Marketplace doughnuts and With Room coffee already?

Don’t forget your hula hoop skills. Brush up on sloth trivia, you may need it as you traverse all the way to Arny’s 2.0. All-in-all, it’s about a half a kilometer and you walk, crawl, or maybe convince a less-slothlike friend to pull you in a wagon.

This mock-marathon event was created as a copy-cat of one seen in Texas in 2018. Though an established 5K run had been offered for the Lions club to take over, members decided this 0.5K was more their style. Last year’s event brought in nearly 100 participants, three large boxes full of eyeglasses, and $3,000 in fundraising. Money is used to provide vision exams or eyeglass purchase assistance to those in great need, as well as other community needs throughout the year. Glasses are cleaned and brought to areas of greatest need to be given out, often to people who’ve spent years or their entire lives without the full benefit of their vision.

It’s a quick yet fun event for people of all (21+) ages. Three beers, coffee and doughnuts, gameplay and live music is all included in your $35 ticket price. There are chances for auction items to be bid on and door prizes to be won.

Even if you’re not attending, feel free to bring your used eyeglasses to our collection drop point outside of Arny’s 2.0 before noon. These can also always be dropped off at a number of Minot locations including the Parker Senior Center, Town and Country Shopping Center, the Ward County Veteran’s office, Johnson Eyecare and Eyewear and Bremer Bank.

Visit the Minot Lions Club on Facebook or minotlions.com for more information and to buy your tickets! Participants must be 21 years of age.
