Space-related fun at KidSpace building at North Dakota State Fair
Andrea Johnson/MDN Children enjoy playing with the big blue blocks in the Lunar Playground in Kid Space at the North Dakota State Fair on Thursday.
Kids “create and build and play” with big blue blocks in the Lunar Playground or maneuvered a robot around lunar rocks at the Lunar Landing Station in the KidSpace building on Thursday afternoon at the North Dakota State Fair.
The new display, sponsored by the Magic City Discovery Center, is open from noon to 7 p.m. during the fair. The building is located right next to the Bunny Barn on the state fairgrounds.
Liz Weeks, education and outreach coordinator for the Magic City Discovery Center, said the children’s museum is still fundraising to build its permanent museum.
This year its new space display display at the State Fair was designed in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon.
At different stations, kids can try out different science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) activities.
Connie Nelson, one of several “STEM ambassadors,” is on hand to help kids make a ‘stomp rocket”out of paper rolled around a PVC pipe that they can launch at a target. Kids learn how air powers the rocket to fly.
Other stations are designed around completing a space mission, using game tables and EV3 LEGO robots on the 2019 FIRST Lego League Mission, according to material provided by the State Fair.
Weeks said the Magic City Discovery Center hopes to also carry its activities into area schools in years to come and to work with local school districts.
She said moms and dads enjoy some of the activities as much as the kids do.
