Baby giraffe born at zoo this week

Submitted Photo This male giraffe calf was born at Minot’s Roosevelt Park Zoo earlier this week.

Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot welcomed its newest addition – a baby giraffe, according to a news release.

The giraffe calf was born early morning on Tuesday in the indoor area of the zoo’s giraffe habitat. Neither baby nor mother giraffe required assistance in the successful birth. Staff Veterinarian Dr. Logan Wood performed a newborn wellness exam Wednesday morning. The calf is healthy, measuring 5 feet, 9 inches and weighs 150 pounds.

The baby giraffe is the eighth calf born to zoo adult giraffe residents Kianga and Mashama. Independent parenting and successful pregnancies have solidified Kianga’s position as a highly ranked female in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums giraffe Species Survival Program. SSP strives to preserve the genetic integrity of endangered species for their survival.

Zoo staff members are asking the community to help name the new baby. More details will be released soon.

The zoo is open daily from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Roosevelt Park Zoo is an AZA-accredited institution. AZA is the independent accrediting organization for the best zoos and aquariums in the world, assuring the public that when they visit an AZA-accredited facility, it meets the highest standards.
