Concerns over squalid motel

Occupants of a Minot motel that has undergone foreclosure proceedings have raised the ire of some residents of the area. Minot city leaders have been working to address the matter for several days but have not been successful in contacting the property owner. It is expected that some type of enforcement action will be taken against the property, but no such action is imminent.

The Fairview Lodge, located on East Burdick Expressway across from the west entrance to the State Fairgrounds, has ceased operation. Water to the facility was turned off two weeks ago. A large “for sale” sign is located at the front of the property.

Exterior doors have been broken down or removed and windows pushed in to allow entry. A few people could be seen moving items out of the motel Thursday, an apparent reaction to social media posts voicing displeasure with activities associated with the building.

Neighbors have complained about trespassers, trash which has included human feces, and other items strewn about the area. The First District Health Unit is among the agencies closely monitoring the situation.

According to a spokesman for the City of Minot, several issues of non-compliance by the business have been identified.

“They are completely out of compliance,” said Derek Hackett, City of Minot public information officer. “They are a motel but have been operating as an apartment. They are also two years delinquent on property tax.”

It is probable that some of the occupants of the Fairview Lodge have rental agreements. Others may be squatting on the property without any such lease or agreement with the owner.

“We’ve not been sitting idle. We are working to correct this,” said Hackett. “It’s important for people to know these things take some time.”

The Fairview Lodge was originally constructed in 1960 and has seen a few changes in name and ownership. The realty company that has listed the property says the building, a two story motel-style with 34 rooms and a manager’s living quarters, is 7,280 square feet on a 25,265 square foot lot. The asking price is $595,000.
