More than 600 books were handed out to area school children and classrooms last week by members of Women United.

Members of the organization prepared the baskets of books that were distributed.

Children each received a book to take home and read with their families to help encourage reading and early learning.

“If you read just 15 minutes a day, in one year you will have read over one million words. We are pleased to be able to extend the opportunity to share the gift of reading to local children,” said Karla Paurus, service committee co-chairwoman, in a press release.

Women United, an affinity group through Souris Valley United Way, includes women who offer time, talent and financial resources to improve lives through the group’s service area. The group worked with the Souris Valley United Way to re-distribute the books through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Souris Valley United Way is the local affiliate for the book program. The books that were re-distributed had been returned by the post office and were undeliverable to children who had moved away from the addresses that were recorded by the United Way.
