Sarah Oliver, Minot, charged with stealing car shortly after pleading guilty to shoplifting

A Minot woman is charged with stealing a red 2013 Hyundai Elantra on Wednesday morning in Minot not long after she pleaded guilty in city court to shoplifting charges.

Law enforcement officers in both cases noted that Sarah Marie Oliver, 35, Minot, appeared to be under the influence on Tuesday and Wednesday and North Central District Court Judge Doug Mattson expressed concern about her state of mind on Thursday as well.

According to court documents, Oliver shoplifted a $16.99 can of mixed oil from Menards on Tuesday afternoon and then dropped the oil on the sidewalk by the garden center entrance and left on foot.

Oliver was later stopped by police while walking behind a dumpster at Staybridge Suites, where she has been living, and immediately told the officer she had been shoplifting. The officer noted that Oliver was sweaty and jittery, both signs of methamphetamine usage.

Oliver pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Minot Municipal Court to B misdemeanor petty theft, received a deferred sentence and was ordered to pay $5 per month for a $25 fine.

Shortly after leaving municipal court on Wednesday, Oliver allegedly stole a car and fled from law enforcement. The car was swerving and driving down the center of the road on U.S. Highway 83, according to a a probable cause affidavit filed with the district court. The McLean County Sheriff’s Department deployed spikes to stop the car at mile marker 165. When she was stopped, Oliver appeared impaired, with constricted pupils. According to the affidavit, a warrant was obtained and Oliver was taken to the hospital for her blood to be drawn and then transported to the Ward County Jail.

Oliver is now charged in district court with Class C felony theft of property, Class C felony fleeing an officer, Class B misdemeanor driving a vehicle under the influence, and Class B misdemeanor driving with a suspended driver’s license.

During her initial appearance in court before Judge Doug Mattson, she appeared confused and the judge asked her if she was all right. Oliver responded that she was fine. She then stood up and thanked the court gallery, the judge and the attorneys. She was later escorted out of the courtroom by a deputy.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for June 20.

Bond was set at $10,000 cash or corporate surety for Oliver.

Oliver was placed on two years of supervised probation last fall for spitting at a Minot police officer in March 2017 and bail jumping in 2017. A sentence for misdemeanor domestic violence in 2018 is concurrent with the other sentences.
